A hamburger is a sandwich made out of one or more cooked patties of ground meat, typically beef, sandwiched between slices of bread or buns. Pan fry, grill, smoke, or flame braise the patty. Due to the fact that variations of the dish have been served for over a century, its origins remain unknown. Hannah Glasse's popular book The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy includes a recipe for "Hamburgh sausage" in 1758, with the suggestion to serve it "roasted on toasted bread underneath." A similar snack known as "Rundstück warm" ("bread roll heated") was apparently popular in Hamburg in 1869 or earlier, and was reportedly consumed by a large number of emigrants on their trip to America, but may have contained roasted beefsteak rather than Frikadeller. On the Hamburg America Line, which began operations in 1847, Hamburg steak was reportedly served between two slices of bread. Each of these factors may have contributed to the invention of the Hamburger and provide an explanation for the name.
Prepare your burgers by grilling them in a straight-sided skillet set over medium-high heat. When you turn the patties, you should notice a well browned and crusty sear on the bottom. That is a great indicator when there is charring on the burger.
A hamburger must be juicy above everything else. You shouldn't rate burgers if you aren't concerned with juiciness. Nonetheless, what precisely does succulent mean? If the burger is big enough and served right away, it will leak. Even the driest pieces seem juicy if the meat is a rich pink hue. The squeeze test is employed to arrive at this conclusion. Take a huge mouthful and squeeze the burger repeatedly. Even if the burger patty is pink all the way through, the burger fluid will pulse in and out much like blood.
Burger is a phrase for the meat patty (especially in the UK), or for ground beef in general. Since beef is usually associated with hamburgers, you may describe them as "beef burgers," "beef substitute burgers," "turkey burgers," "bison burgers," or "vegetarian burgers."
